Characteristics of an Old Mine Cut Diamond
Shape: Typically has a cushion-like, slightly uneven shape with gently rounded corners.
Facets: Features large, chunky facets that create a distinct, warm, and romantic sparkle, different from the intense brilliance of modern cuts.
Proportions: Characterized by a high crown, a small table (the flat top surface), a deep pavilion (the lower part of the diamond), and a large, eye-visible culet (a facet at the very bottom point).
History: This cut dates back to the early 18th century, spanning the Georgian and Victorian eras, when diamonds were cut by hand, often using candlelight.
Rarity: Due to technological advancements in diamond cutting, many original old mine cut diamonds were recut into modern round brilliants, contributing to their rarity today.
