Antique red spinel, historically known as “Balas ruby,” was treasured for centuries as a “ruby,” with notable examples like the Black Prince’s Ruby and Timur Ruby gracing royal collections. Mined extensively in Afghanistan since the 10th century, these gems were prized by kings, often taken as war spoils, and were only scientifically distinguished from ruby in 1783.
